Slave compensation papers, 1866-1867.

This collection contains claim forms submitted by Joseph F. Ward of Jefferson County for a slave, Benjamin Green, who was mustered into the U.S. Army. Ward's application noted he owned Green's mother and that Green was born his slave. Ward sought compensation of $300 for Green. The claim contains signatures of witnesses attesting Ward's loyalty. There is no indication in these papers if Ward's claim was ultimately approved.
